9 Questions to Ask Before You Leave Your Car at Any Garage

Updated 17 July 2026 · CarOner Pune fair-price data

Ask for a written estimate with parts and labour listed separately. Ask what exactly triggered the diagnosis. Ask whether you get the old parts back. Do all three before you hand over the keys, not after. Most overbilling happens in the gap between “drop the car off” and “here’s your bill,” and these questions close that gap before it opens.

We’ve watched the same pattern repeat at garage counters across Pune. Car goes in for one problem, comes out with a bill covering three. It isn’t always fraud. Sometimes a mechanic genuinely finds more wrong once the car’s up on the lift. But you can’t tell the difference from the outside unless you ask first. Here are the nine questions that matter.

1. Can I get a written estimate before you start?

Verbal quotes drift. A written estimate, even a WhatsApp message with a list, gives you something to hold the garage to later. If a mechanic won’t put anything down on paper before starting, walk. That’s not a small red flag, that’s the whole flag.

2. What exactly is wrong, and how did you find it?

Push for the method, not just the verdict. “The oil looks dark” is an observation. “Oil pressure reading is low at idle” is a finding. Can’t explain how they got from one to the other? They’re probably guessing, and you’re paying for the guess.

For anything beyond a routine service, a proper general diagnosis check isolates the actual fault before parts get ordered. If a garage wants to start swapping parts to “see if that fixes it,” that’s their trial and error running up your bill.

3. Labour or parts, or both, broken down separately?

A single lump-sum number hides everything. Get labour and parts itemised. This one question catches the two most common padding tricks in the business: inflated labour hours and marked-up parts.

4. OEM or aftermarket, and do I get to choose?

Neither is wrong on its own. But you should know which one you’re paying for, and you should get a say. Some garages quote OEM pricing and quietly fit aftermarket, pocketing the gap. Ask, and ask to see the part before it goes in if the job allows it.

5. Can I keep the old part?

The single best check-and-balance question here. A garage genuinely replacing what it says it’s replacing has no reason to say no. One that isn’t, or one replacing something that never needed replacing, will usually find a reason the old part “had to be discarded.”

6. How long will this actually take?

Get a real window, not “should be done today.” A comprehensive service that’s meant to take half a day but keeps sliding by another day every time you call means the garage is either understaffed or has too many cars on the floor. Either way, yours isn’t the priority.

7. What’s covered if something goes wrong after I pick it up?

Ask before the work starts, not after something rattles loose on the highway. A garage confident in its own work tells you plainly what’s covered and for how long. A vague answer here usually means vague accountability later.

8. Anything else you noticed that isn’t urgent?

This one flips the incentive. The mechanic doesn’t get to unilaterally decide what lands on your bill; they have to disclose everything and let you sort urgent from later. Genuinely urgent should come with a clear reason attached, not just “better to be safe.”

9. What would this cost elsewhere, and why is yours different?

No need to be adversarial. Just ask. A garage confident in its pricing will explain the gap, whether it’s better parts, faster turnaround, or a warranty. One that gets defensive is worth a second opinion.

What “normal” pricing actually looks like in Pune

Knowing a rough band before you walk in changes the whole conversation. Two examples from CarOner’s own fair-price dataset:

Job Pune price range Data points
Standard Service ₹3,200–₹6,500 22
Engine Oil + Filter Change ₹1,800–₹2,550 5

If a quote lands well outside a range like this with no clear reason (unusual parts, a rare model, extra work found mid-service), that’s your cue to ask question 3 again. Harder this time.

General diagnosis pricing is trickier to benchmark, because it depends entirely on what’s actually wrong. Which is the whole point of question 2. Don’t accept a diagnostic fee that’s really a blank cheque for whatever they find next.

The one habit that changes everything

Ask these out loud, in the garage, before you hand over the keys. Not over the phone, not after. Standing there while someone answers changes the incentive on the spot. It’s a lot harder to quote inflated labour hours to someone’s face than to a car that’s already been dropped off and forgotten until pickup.

Quick answers

What questions should I ask before leaving my car at a garage?

Ask for a written estimate with parts and labour split out, ask what triggered the diagnosis and how it was found, and ask if you get the old parts back. Those three catch most overbilling before it happens.

How much does a standard car service cost in Pune?

Standard Service runs ₹3,200–₹6,500 in Pune, based on 22 verified jobs in CarOner's dataset. A quote well outside that band without a clear reason (rare model, extra parts) is worth questioning.

Should a garage return my old parts after a repair?

Yes, and ask before work starts. A garage genuinely replacing what it says it's replacing has no reason to refuse. Reluctance here is one of the clearest signs of unnecessary or unfinished work.
